University Marketing & Communications has an exciting opening for a Front-End Web Developer. This is a full-time permanent position.
The University of Washington’s Web Strategy team creates, manages and supports many of the University's websites, including the University’s homepage. It is tasked with the creation and maintenance of a cohesive and compelling online experience for visitors that advances our brand promise.
The Front-End Web Developer helps the Web Strategy team by building and maintaining the Undergraduate Admissions, Welcome Center, Visit, New Huskies and related Husky Experience websites. To do this, the candidate must be at the forefront of front-end web development, utilizing innovative methodologies and approaches to user interface design and construction. They must understand the unique needs of prospective students and their families and be able to translate these needs into compelling and effective websites. Furthermore, they must have a keen eye for detail, ensuring that designs are pixel-perfect and code is modern and well-structured.
What You Will Do:
- Design, develop and maintain themes, templates and websites for the Office of Admissions, along with other highly visible sites and online projects that support the University’s priorities and engage the public.
- Identify existing and evolving technology to upgrade the design and information architecture of key web sites.
- Partner with designers, UX practitioners, content authors and key stakeholders to tell the story of the University and help students learn more about the admission process.
- Create and maintain online style guides and documentation.
- Act as a liaison to help implement design standards, accessibility and best practices through the University community.
- Work with team members and others in identifying and developing new features, sites, programs, tools and designs that embrace best practices, standards, usability and accessibility.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer science, engineering, programming, web development, information management, information technology, human-computer interaction, or related field AND at three years of experience in front-end web development.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
What You Bring:
- A compelling portfolio of websites you have personally developed.
- Proficiency in HTML, CSS and JavaScript and familiarity with the latest web techniques, technologies, languages and libraries.
- Experience with WordPress, including theming and developing custom extensions/plugins.
- Knowledge of LESS, SASS, or other CSS pre-processors.
- Familiarity with WCAG standards and a demonstrated ability to apply enhancements for accessibility.
- Strong understanding of UX standards and/or Universal Design.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work collaboratively with creative directors, designers and other key stakeholders and teams.
- Familiar with the latest web techniques, technologies, languages and libraries and understand their strengths and weaknesses.
